The Stream, Photographs 2024-2025 Ongoing

Since Mark’s arrival in Canada in 1989 he has visited a small stream 1km form his home in northern Nova Scotia for 37 years. This Acadian Forest valley has remained intact while the surrounding forests have fallen to forestry. For Mark the stream has become a metaphor for the resiliency of landscape. Mark wanted to explore the idea of ‘forest time’, to catch a glimpse of the seemingly unchanged landscape through photographs that he would make over a period of years.

“When you watch or pay attention to wild places over the long term an intricate visual tapestry is formed that enables us to experience what draws us into the landscape in the first place. I am able to capture the hidden character of these woods through photographs which forms a deeper more meaningful bond, revealing something both about myself and the landscape. This work is also a way of honoring place and rekindling a shift away from the anthropocentric world view towards a more ecologically sensitive understanding of place.”

This work is ongoing and is being made using a medium format Mamiya 67 camera withe Kodak Ektar 100 film.
